At our traditional Holy Thursday Mass, the oils from the Chrism mass celebrated that morning in the cathedral, were presented to the Parish. We then celebrated the Mass of the Lord’s Supper. For this mass the unleavened Eucharistic bread is baked by a parishioner, Alice Tam. At the conclusion of the Mass the altar is stripped clear and the Blessed Sacrament is taken to a Chapel of Repose where the community is invited to stay, watching and praying.
Friday morning parishioners could attend two Stations of the Cross. The Youth Group have a Stations of the Cross acted and prayed in Ashfield park. This year two of the candidates for baptism took the roles of Jesus and Mary and found the experience very enriching.
There was a Stations of the Cross in the Church as well.
Celebration of Lord’s Passion took place at 3pm. This well attended service is a continuation of the Mass of the previous evening.
Saturday morning ws the final prayers and preparation for the Elect, those who are about to be baptised, that evening at the Easter Vigil. This year we had 9 Elect, although two of the young ones only received baptism as they want to be formed within the community.
The Easter Vigil
There was a great air of excitement as thee church filled up in the gradual darkening church. The flames of the fire were videoed on the screen for the first time for those who couldn’t come to stand around the fire. The fire flicked and waned and then shot to life to light our Easter candle….another masterpiece designed for St Vincent’s by another parishioner, Sr Pat Snudden RSJ.
Our Elect were shivering with expectation in their “to get wet” clothes. After celebrating the stories of Salvation history we sang and rang the bells for the Gloria, the lights in the church went on. Father blessed the water and one by one are Elect stepped into the pool for baptism. It was glorious!
After changing into their new white garments , our newly baptised went ‘sprinkling’ and sharing the joy of their baptismal water with the community. From there, with their godparents/sponsors they received the Light of Christ and were confirmed in the Spirit.
We then continued with Mass, with our newly baptised gathered around the altar to celebrate their First Holy Communion.
Our joyous night continued over into the hall where Lillie Furlong and her wonderful hospitality committee had prepared a wonderful supper.
